The Call of Agulhas

Make your way to the southernmost tip of Africa for a holiday to the seaside of a lifetime, in a wildly beautiful setting, where you will find crystal clear rock pools to explore, beaches offering long walks and a lagoon that is sheltered and is ideal for swimming.

The iconic lighthouse has a fascinating museum and along the coast you will be able to see shipwrecks that capture the attention. Stay in the original Strandveld farmstead or at the newly opened camp that overlooks the sea offering views that go on forever, and at night when all is quiet, the sound of the waves will sing a lullabye until you fall asleep.

Places where you can stay at Agulhas:

• Lagoon House
• Rhenosterkop Guest Cottages
• Rietfontein Guest Houses
• Bergplaas Guest House
• Agulhas Rest Camp

The best time of the year to visit Agulhas is when summer is drawing to a close and the tempestuous southeaster dies down to a little breeze. The new chalets that are cuddles in the dunes and Agulhas Rest Camp have brilliant views of the craggy coastline. One of the nicest things to do is lying in bed and gazing out at the sea. A fresh and brisk walk along the beach after high tide will reveal anemones, sea urchins and limpets in the numerous little rock pools.

If you are keen to discover the fishing traps that have been set by the Khoikhoin, follow the trail along the Rasperpunt for 5,5 km from the Meisho Maru shipwreck, and if the day is fine and clear, go for a brisk swim at the lagoon which has been toasted by the sun.

Cape Grysbok is nocturnal and is often seen in the Agulhas National Park in the early morning and late afternoon and also on cooler days. They are solitary creatures but the autumn season heralds the mating season where you often spot a ram and ewe quite twickerpuckered with each other strolling side by side.

Look out for Black Harriers, the rocky shore urchins and the tick berry which is an evergreen shrub that grows on the dunes along the coastline, covered in golden yellow flowers in autumn and resemble daisies; later on become glossy black berry-like fruit which attracts a myriad of birdlife.

Visit the iconic lighthouse in Agulhas which has its own national museum. Agulhas is indeed a fine and untamed place that everyone should visit at least once.

Rough Holidays in SA are Special, Especially Those in the Northern Cape

Nothing quite beats roughing it in SA. The picturesque Northern Cape, place of the great noise will cast a spell of magic where there is no return.

Cape Town seems a lifetime away and feels as if it is much further than the mere 521 km it actually is. It is hard to imagine that the arid terrain of the Northern Cape was once covered in lush sub-tropical vegetation but that was literally eons ago during the Miocene period.

The dry, barren landscape around Brandvlei offers little more than a few lonely shrubs indigenous to the area, mountains in the distance and a forlorn black tarred road. Friendless and desolate, and a little inhospitable, it is surprising anyone would want to settle in this Godforsaken part of the world, but settle they do.

Along the route the small town of Kenhardt was established around a giant camelthorn tree. An isolated windmill here and there, the tiny town reminds one of the frontier towns once featured in old cowboy and Indian movies.

There is a great surging river that gushes across the landscape only a little way up north transforming the dry and desolate vegetation into a lush green oasis.

The Orange River is responsible for flourishing vineyards and is South Africa’s longest river and originates in the Drakensberg mountains and in the heart of the Green Kalahari the waters roar into a splendid display at the Ougrabies Falls. The falls cascade 56 m down into a 240 m gorge and are the second largest in Africa after the Victoria Falls.

A 55 383 ha Ougrabies Falls National Park established in 1966 means the place of great noise. There are stunning strategic viewpoints and the park offers a plethora of actives such as self-drive routes, hiking trails, and plenty of excellent accommodation.

There are wonderful little B & B establishments along the banks on the banks of the Orange River where you can sample wonderful food and superb locally produced wine.

Weather conditions are extremely variable in the Northern Cape with temperatures ranging from -1 degrees C during winter to + 53 degrees recorded in the Richtersveld. The distances are vast.

When roughing it in the Northern Cape it is advisable to use every opportunity to fill up with fuel and carry plenty drinking water. Never divert from the designated roads.

Roughing it in SA Has Never Been Better

The road less travelled has never been as inviting as this wonderful offering. Take that trip and explore the wonder of rural villages and bubbling mountain streams in the heart of Mpumalanga.

If you need to escape from the hustle and the bustle of city life and you need to get away from it all the Ebutsini 4 X 4 route offers the kind of scenic adventure for the entire family that will inject a feeling of well-being into your psyche you forgot you had. The route will also teach you about the local geography and history and is a project brought to life by Gideon Stapelberg who also likes to make sure you know all the tricks of the trade (or in this instance, the tricks of the trail).

The trail follows a road through the wetlands and eKulindeni grass between Songimvelo Game Reserve right up to the border of Swaziland. It is a route that begins at the eKulindeni Tourist Centre just outside Badplaas and takes only about four to five hours to complete, but it is nicest when taken really slowly.

Bring along all your bird and tree books and a good pair of binoculars. You can enjoy naming and identifying all types of trees, including acacia, marula, thorn and numerous others. The road will begin to incline after about a 10km stretch and the plant life will also start to change, featuring proteas and boekenhout trees and eventually the landscape will metamorphe into grasslands and open savannah on top of the mountain range.

This trail is family-friendly and tours can be perfectly tailored to include activities such as quad-biking and fly-fishing as well as game drives. If you prefer, the tour can be designed and made to be more intense for the 4 X 4 enthusiast.

This area is famous for its medicinal plants and it could also include a visit to a sangoma.

Explore the local culture by taking a little time and by lingering at the little villages dotted along the trail. And an evening around a camp fire drinking in the Swazi dancing and delectable local cuisine will give this trip a perfect finale to a wonderful adventure. Roughing it in SA has never been better.

WHERE IS YOUR IDEAL HOLIDAY DESTINATION

I have just got to hear the word Argentina and the passion of the tango stirs my hormones. But a pilgrimage across the Pyrenees and meeting at the Monastery of Roncesvalles in the far north of Spain would also do it for me. So whether it is the grand tour, the hippie trail, discovering the last frontiers or bundu bashing, there is a whole world out there.

The grand tour could take you to all the places visited by the hero in his novel “The Da Vinci Code”. The Knights Templar in Fleet Street, the Saint-Sulpice Church in Paris a 17th century church which contains the largest organ in the world, Westminister Abbey, The Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh Scotland the focus of esoteric religious groups, the Louvre Inverted Pyramid Museum in Paris, Chateau Villette – the home of eccentric art historian Sir Leigh Teabing in Paris, The
Ritz Hotel Paris, and the National Gallery.

As for the last frontiers, North Korea including Paekdu Secret Camps from where the army was based. Although only recently founded, South Sudan falls into this category of politically and economically troubled parts of Africa.

Bundu bashing has always been a favourite pastime in South Africa but you can get a whole lot of this excitement abroad as well. For instance Northern Columbia where it melts into the Darian jungle of Panama. Attempts at crossing the Darien Gap on foot have had life-changing effects; but with the recent calming in Columbia – 2012 should be the year for visiting this corer of the world.

Learning new skills like a painting trip to Kathmandu, Havana or Icatha and pitching your easel amid pueblos blancos for a week; or warrior training in Mongolia where you can learn how to make a bow and arrow and other interesting battle tactics as used by Ghengis Khan.

So who said you have to do the usual down-to-the-coast thing when so much else is at your disposal in the way of interesting holidays.

Buying Books that best suits your needs

We all know that it is a socially acceptable behavior for everyone of us to have their very type of book genres that fully contents their reading horizons without the forgetting the thought of enhancing that much needed knowledge you get after reading the book. And you tell me about yours! Because in every 3 individuals that can be interviewed with regards to what kinds of book they prefer on to say they all love the same genre of book like novel since all of them will shed their preferences distinctively. The first one will go for literature, whereas the other one will opt for novel which the last one without the shadow of doubt will go for biographies. Methinks with that varied preferences of book genres that definitely shows how distinctive we are and do find solace in the one you have chosen and works for you since the one you have chosen clearly defines you and won’t work for the other individual. Granted they are books at the end of the day, but if it had to be defined what it is would simply be that it is books may also refer to works of literature, or a main division of such a work.

In library and information science, a book is called a monograph, to distinguish it from serial periodicals as such magazines, journals or newspapers. The body of all written works including books is literature. In novels and sometimes other types of books (for example, biographies), a book may be divided into several large sections, also called books (Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, and so on). A lover of books is usually referred to as a bibliophile, a philologist, or, more informally, a bookworm.

So whatever way we ought to perceive how we call it all boils down to one thing at the end of the day which is a book in generic terms, and waste no further time to have your ideal kind of book that will give you pleasure of mind to bits.

There are some great Cape Town hotels to stay at along the coastline, but if you want to be right at the beach with no other building between you and the surf, then you might have to look a lot longer and harder than you might have anticipated. Many a time pictures and hotel agencies can be deceiving in giving you a beachfront hotel.

If you enjoy self-catering, or if you like to get out and about when it’s time for breakfast, lunch or dinner, then renting a beachhouse is one route to go – and there are also some great self-catering apartments to choose from, such as those alongside the On the Rocks restaurant, Bloubergstrand.

Actually, it’s at Bloubergstrand north of Cape Town’s harbour that you’ll find one of the few Cape Town hotels on the beachfront. The Dolphin Beach Hotel is a matter of steps away from the sea sand – a few dunes are all that separate the hotel and the Cabanas from the surf. The restaurant (Blowfish) is pretty good too, and the view of Table Mountain from across Table Bay is spectacular.

A bit closer to the mountain is the Lagoon Beach Hotel & Apartments, 2km from the Milnerton Golf Course and 5km from the huge Canal Walk shopping complex.

The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay is casually sophisticated, well-appointed and being no more than 100 metres from the beach, it spills onto one of the city’s most popular strips of restaurants, street cafés and bars. Just up the road, The Place on the Bay is just as trendy.

And for somewhere luxurious and intimate to stay just a stone’s throw from the sea and sand, is The Last Word, an upmarket hotel overlooking Long Beach in Kommetjie. One of the most decadent, glorious Cape Town hotels for sure!

What is a retreat? – To retreat means to withdraw and that is what a retreat “holiday” is – a chance to withdraw from the world for a while. Often associated with religion, or at least spirituality, retreats have in common a chance to be in a peaceful, non-judgemental, welcoming environment. However, not all retreats are connected to a particular religion, and many will offer you the opportunity to spend quiet time in meditation and activities that you feel are right for your circumstances and beliefs. The main benefit of a retreat is to take the opportunity to have real quality time to yourself, to reflect and think. People often leave retreats feeling refreshed, energised and more creative.

Religious retreats – Retreats have long been very popular in the Catholic Church, and give people the chance to reflect and pray. Although you do not need to be a churchgoer to attend a Catholic retreat, many attendees are. Other Christian denominations also run retreats that are based on study, reflection and prayer. There are not usually services or teaching involved but sometimes there can be so if this is something you particularly want then it is best to check the details carefully before you book. Retreats are also popular with other religions, particularly Buddhism. But what all religious retreats have in common is the opportunity to spend time in relaxing, often simple surroundings, usually in beautiful, inspiring settings. Other activities may be available during a religious retreat, including meditation, yoga, walking, or painting.

Non-religious retreats – Non-religious retreats are becoming increasingly popular as more people want to escape the stresses of modern life for a few days. Retreats involving gentle exercise and relaxation sessions do not have to be spiritual in any way. However, many retreats address the need for spiritual health and also offer meditation sessions. Creative and artistic retreats are also popular. If you are a writer or an artist it is sometimes difficult to find a time and space to be creative and work. On an art or writing retreat you will find quiet accommodation, good food, and a relaxing atmosphere. You may also find workshops and literature to inspire you.

Location – Whichever kind of retreat you are considering, you also need to consider location. From the islands of Scotland to India, retreats are available in every kind of climate and landscape. So whether you are inspired by the sea, countryside or tropical weather you will be able to find the perfect location. Any retreat should leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed, so if you are experiencing the stresses of modern life and need to escape, it might be worth getting onto the internet and doing some research now to find the perfect solution.
